Kale Chips

Yup you read it right Kale Chips, the most wonderful and easy to make snackables that you will be glad to much on!  Kale is by far one of my favorite vegetables.  The leaves come in so many varieties and I eat it several times per week.  Sometimes I will saute it or steam it, combined with a nice hearty soup or layered on top of steamy quinoa or millet, it never fails to bring satisfaction to my taste buds.   It holds seasonings well and three minutes in a steamer is all it takes to make it wilt and yet stay vibrant and alive with its rich hues of purples and greens.  As it is a staple of my diet I am always trying to find ways to remake it into some other dish or add pair it with my latest vegetable from the farmer’s market that I am experimenting with.

I have come to appreciate kale in all its delightfully edible ways, but one has got me hooked in ways that have given my taste buds its flavorful bite while feeding my long love for all things crunchy.  I love chips in all their forms but as we know they often offer  the immediate satisfaction of their crunch without the health.  That’s the beauty of the kale chip.  I will caution you that not all kale chips are alike.  Grocery store bought can sometimes be laden with palm oils, sugars and other additives.  However making them on your own is a great alternative and super easy.

Here is the basic recipe: (requires dehydrator)

Kale Chips

1. Clean and cut kale into pieces

2. Massage in a large bowl with lemon juice and olive oil

3. Add spices: garlic, oregano, or  Frontier’s Pizza Seasoning (one of my favorites)

4. Optional additive: Nutritional Yeast or Braggs Liquid Aminos, sea salt

Place in dehydrator at 115 degrees for 2-4 hours (you may also marinate and dehydrate the next day).

Don’t be afraid to play with the flavors and work your spice rack, see what goes well together for you.  Perhaps you would like more of a rich warm flavor, spices such as  cumin, curry powder and turmeric might be worth trying and if you like your chips spicy why not throw in some cayenne or paprika.

So when you are looking for a bag of chips to snack on think green!  Think kale!  And make yourself a bag worthy of your taste buds and your body.  Share your kale chip receipe and lets mix up a bag together.
