Music as healing

I recently listened to an NPR “The World” broadcast of a band called Club Delf. It sparked my interest as soon as I heard that the band was using music that originated in Morocco.

I used to live in Morocco as a child so anything that has to do with that area of the world cultural resonates with me. In an interview with the band members Marco Werman discussed how the band uses the ancient practices of Moroccan gnawa sacred music often used in ceremonies and rituals for healing.

Colors represent spirits which are expressed by the music, each song has its own spirit and its own color associated with it. There are a total of 7 colors within the gnawa sacred music. You can find out more about Club Delf and hear the broadcast of the show at http://www.theworld.org/2011/05/boston-band-club-delf/.

Learning about this form of music got me to consider modalities of healing and what we can and do use to help ourselves heal with UC.

I reflected on the use of gem therapy which I experienced at the Hippocrates Health Institute. This therapy involved me laying on a bed of colorful gem stones that were heated while two were centered directly on my belly from above. I closed my eyes and rested and from this experience I could feel my belly open up and become less tight. I also felt as if toxins were being drained from me and I awoke feeling as though I had released much of what I would consider unwanted matter from my body. It wasn’t anything I could see, it was simply what I felt. The interesting part is that each time I went for the therapy there were a variety of gems that could be used. After a while I could feel what worked for me and I began to request those gems of a particular color. The color released for me a healing property that I gained from. So with this color became a significant factor in my healing process.

We know that colors exist in a spectrum, a range of which we can see in a limited perspective. As my boyfriend explained more concretely we are only aware of a small fraction of the color spectrum in our visualization. Along this music in its notes and keys, has a range of sounds and frequencies which if placed alongside of color could potentially illicit a color. My boyfriend told me the story of a priest who was blind from birth he once knew who knew colors by way of sounds. That green sounded like “E” for example. What I would like to consider is how the tunes that we listen to and the sounds in our environment along with the colors that we may create in our space for example with Feng Shui which tells us that pastels are good for the bedroom to create calm and quiet spaces, can become healing properties for our mind and our body. Perhaps they already do for you. I for one certainly wouldn’t be opposed to listening to some music and color being released into my mind’s eye to sooth me and bring me comfort. How about you?
